Since 2012
Northwind Travel Co. was founded on a simple argument: the world is loudest at the edges, and the best way to hear it is in a group small enough to be invisible and guided by someone who grew up where you're standing.
Elena Marsh spent a decade leading tours that were efficient and forgettable — forty names in a bus, a checklist of sights, and nobody ever seeing the real place. In 2012 she resigned, booked twelve seats to Bali, and walked every trail, temple and warung herself before inviting a single guest. That first Uluwatu retreat is still on our books today, barely changed, exactly because it was designed by walking.
Fourteen years later the philosophy hasn't budged: every route is re-walked before it ships, groups never exceed twelve, and guides are locals with the credentials to match the terrain — archaeologists in Greece, mountain guides in Patagonia, Maasai trackers in the Mara. We run logistics so the days stay wild.
The crew
A thirty-four-person company spread over four time zones, joined by one habit: none of us will recommend a trip we haven't taken.

Traveler field notes
“We honeymooned in an overwater villa and barely touched the mainland — exactly as promised. House reef snorkelling every day, a sandbank picnic, flawless logistics. It set the bar for every trip after.”
“The Full Glacier day with crampons was the single greatest day of my life outdoors. Guides were obsessive about safety and weather timing. A physically honest itinerary, and they make you feel ready for it.”
“They retimed our hanami walks to the actual bloom week and we stood under full sakura three mornings running. Tea ceremony in a 400-year-old house felt like a private audience with Kyoto.”
One conversation is all it takes to turn a wish-list into a departure date.
